Background
History:
- Spoiler:
Gye had grown up similar to every other kid Pyrite town; his home smack dab in the middle of the swarm of scrap metal houses that made up the ghetto’s of Pyrite. His mother was an infamously overworked Waitress at the corner diner and his father spent his days down in the mines that gave the region of orre its name. As a young boy Gye spent most of his days doing whatever he could to help his parents out: he took care of all of the housework, made minor repairs to keep the house standing, and when he could he would even scrounge the streets for old bottles in hopes of recycling them for a small reward. Despite his hard work he remained ever grateful to both his parents for being able to maintain stable jobs and keep him from moving to “The Under” as he had seen so many families around him fall apart and do.
The Orre region was very different from other regions. While most outsiders knew of it for its technologically advanced feats in architecture and automobiles, as well as the rapid breakthroughs that their famous Pokemon lab produced, it was the people who lived there that really understood the cultural ruin that the region was under. To start with, most of the region was made up of deserts, so those who didn’t live near the ocean had to make a home in the dense forests to the far north, or try and fight for space in Pyrite town. While other regions had, what Gye called, the “Ritual” of leaving home while young and adventuring with your Pokemon, the Orre region never even established an official Pokemon “League”, leaving its residence to carry on with mundane lives of working to live, and of course, nobody could forget about the dangerous groups of gangs that ran the region.
While Pokemon battle’s weren’t uncommon throughout the city, Gye had never even considered owning his own Pokemon until his dad had returned home one from the mines one day with a Skitty in his hands. The creature was small, skinny, and looked like it had been living in a trash can for the past few weeks. His dad had explained to him that the the Skitty was a stray that him and some of the guys from work had been feeding for the last few days, and when it started following him home he figured it would be good company for his son.
Years went by and Gye had considered the Skitty as little more than a household pet, but a close friend nonetheless. His mother continued working days in and out as usual and his father had begun to develop a cough. Nobody in the house had thought twice about it, or at least nobody brought it up around gye. The boy felt his life was in a place of contempt until one day when a knock woke him late at night. As soon as he opened the door his heart fell, four men, his father's co-workers, they had all been by the house at least once before to see his father so Gye knew them all by name. They each stood, eyes to the ground and hardhats in hand as the one in the lead, the one who knocked began talking. He told Gye that his father had entered a fit of coughing that evening in the mines, he had gone on like that for at least five straight minutes before the coughing came to a sudden halt, as if his dad had just given up on the will to fight against it any more.
In the years following the tragedy Gye’s mother had take up a second job, Whether it was to be able to support Gye, or simply to keep her mind off of the recent death of her husband Gye didn’t know, nor did he worry about it. With his father gone, something had triggered within Gye. that innocent Skitty that he had seen as no more than a house pet changed in his eyes and became something like a prized treasure, something that he clung to. It was in these years following his father's tragedy that Gye had taken the interest to learn the ways of Pokemon battling. He endured long treks into the desert outside of Pyrite town just to find wild Pokemon that his Skitty could handle. He learned how to battle through constant defeat, and after months of training he turned his attention towards the trainers that triumphantly gallivanted throughout the town. The once meek and humble boy from the slums had vanished, and in his place stood a fiery eyed young man with the look of a dream in his eyes, somebody who aimed to strive, Gye had taken up training to prevail.
At the age of 19 Gye turned his sites away from the city. Using the cumulative prize money from so many matches and in-city contests he had been able to afford himself a scrap built motor bike; a motorized vehicle was the only way somebody could think of crossing the deserts of Orre. With Skitty in tow Gye began his adventure across the Orre. With conquering Mt.Battle as his final goal he made his first destination Agate village, a known hotspot for trainers both young and old, those new to battling as well as the most veteran trainers around. After he made sure his impression was left he went to his next destination, and then the next, and so on.
After conquering the strongest trainer’s that the infamous Pokemon HQ Lab had to offer the scientists there, amazed at the unbreakable bond between Gye and his Skitty, awarded him with a moonstone. While hesitant at first over evolving Skitty, Gye finally came to the conclusion that his Pokemon would stay the same no matter what it looked like and that his worries were only shallow, and selfish. It was not long after Skitty’s evolution into Delcatty that Gye received word that his mother had fallen ill and had become too weak to work. Gye knew that anybody who was too weak to work in Pyrite town would soon be forced to either live on the streets, or make the move into the crime ridden “Under”.
Gye had left for Pyrite town without a second thought. The long ride gave his mind time to wonder and think on what he had done to his own mother. He was prodded by empathy with harsh feelings of guilt; after the death of his father he had all but disappeared from his mom’s life, he had taken the only other company she’s ever known and left.
Upon arriving in Pyrite town Gye had B-lined for his old home. When he saw the mess of scrap that remained of his old home his heart plummeted. If his mother wasn’t here then the only other option was “The Under”. With no time to waste on wrestling with the fear lurking inside of him Gye headed for “The Under”, descending into the skyless cave that made up the dark underbelly of Pyrite town. “The Under” had always been known for its crime’s, gang’s, disease, and poverty. Gye realized as the endless rusted roofs of this red ocean of metal lean-to houses drew closer, he didn’t feel any sympathy for the people that found themselves trapped down here. Instead, as the rickety elevator doors swung open, he felt a flame burning deep inside him; a passion not unlike the one he felt when he first started training skitty.
Gye went house by house, street by street in his frantic search for his mother. He searched for what he swore was a couple days on end, the lack of sky doing nothing to help his nervous distortion of time. When he finally slammed open a door to see a room of at least five elderly individuals, one of which, lying in a corner on the far end of the room was his very recognizable mother. He could have fainted with the relief of finding her there unharmed, if it weren't for the rusted metal door of the home being slammed to a shut as soon as he entered. He bounded towards the rear end of the hut, putting himself between whoever it was and his mother.
Three men, each in the same get up: shirtless with an unbuttoned and open leather jacket around their torso and dusty jeans, the man in the lead had some sort of robotic device wrapping around his arm and down to his hand. They were obviously members of some gang, Gye had dealt with many just like them when he was still training in Pyrite Town and he had no doubt that him and Delcatty could do it again. The man in lead began by explaining that Gye had roughed him and another member of their up a few years prior and after noticing him leaving the elevator they decided to tail him. The man threw out a Grimer and Gye responded by unleashing Delcatty and ordering a Double Slap. He noticed the man across from his fidgeting with something in his hand, it wasn’t until it was too late that he could make out the small red and white colors of a Pokeball. The man threw it at the charging Delcatty before Gye could attempt to call out his Pokemon. It made contact, sucking Delcatty into the Pokeball. Gye felt his heart drop into his stomach and stood motionless as the Pokeball wobbled twice before flying back into the mystery man’s hands. In his travels he had heard of Team Snagam and their cause to steal Pokemon but it had seemed like the type of awful news you only hear of, he had never even dreamed it would happen to him; now that it was too late for him to be cautious he could only feel as if he had let Delcatty down. The three men ran out of the home, slamming the door behind them. Gye wanted to give chase, he wanted to hunt those men down and tear Delcatty out of their hands if he had to, but he knew that he would never find them in these foreign twisting streets. He could feel the hot stream of tears beginning to slide down his cheeks and he did nothing to try and stop them.
After a few moments to compose himself Gye came to a stand. With no Pokemon, he had no way to contest team Snagam and get Delcatty back, so he tried to turn all of his attention towards getting his mother to safety. She had been unconscious through the fight and when he picked her up he could tell she was burning hot and thinner than a broomstick. He trudged his way back towards the elevator to Pyrite town, ascending the rickety tower back to the light of the sun. It wasn’t until Gye had already strapped her onto his motorbike and set out, away from the city that he now hated with his entire being, that she opened her eye’s. She smiled at him with a look of pure innocence. Gye couldn’t help but break down again as he told his mother of his past few years and the adventure he had had, ending it with finding her and Delcatty being snagged. His mother responded by wiping away at his eyes and weeping for him, in the way that only a mother could ever be expected to do.
With hours now behind them Gye let out a sigh of relief as the giant tree’s of Agate village shaded him from the harsh afternoon sun. With mother using him as a crutch the two of them made their way to the home of an elderly gentleman that Gye had recently become acquainted with on his last visit to Agate. Using up almost all of the money that Gye had left from his travels he struck up a deal with the man that would allow him and his mother to live there with him. Despite having just arrived, Gye had no plans to stay long term. In fact, just on the ride over he had already begun to lay out his plans to not only recover Delcatty from Team Snagem, but to wipe them off of the map and ensure that nobody would ever fall prey to trauma that had just befallen him.
Defining Moments: * The death of his father * The moment he looked at his Skitty as something more than a household pet * His adventures through Orre * His Delcatty being Snagged.
